It’s Never Too Late To Pursue Your Creative Dreams!

Today I want to tell you about one of my current clients who has inspired me by the creating courage she has been able to tap into. This woman started my ACCESS! program six months ago. She hasn’t even finished the program yet, but the progress she’s made with revitalizing her creative power is so incredible and inspiring, that I felt obligated to share her compelling story with you.

Sharon is in her mid-70s. She has been retired from a very successful career for over eleven years now. She was the Executive Director of a quickly growing non-profit human services organization. Her passion for her work life stretched her personally in ways she never had thought were possible. Once a shy young girl, she stepped into the role of an outgoing, gregarious lobbyist who took any chance she got to publicly speak about her organization that she believed in so strongly. She had no problem asking people for money and support because she knew in her heart deeply that her organization could help her community as a whole. When she retired from the job, she had mixed feelings. It was very demanding on her time and energy and she was ready to let that part go, but what she didn’t want to let go of was that passionate feeling her job inspired in her. That passion was tied to her creating ability. She had created money, opportunities, and solutions for so many others who had none. She was quite a powerful creator. After being retired for a number of years she began to wonder if she had anything left to contribute. Her creative life was suffering. She was feeling isolated, powerless, and often depressed.

We started working together about six months ago, discovering together how to access her unique creative power. Through the process we discovered that her creative projects needed to stimulate some of the good things about her past career and leave out some of the not so great things. Together we assessed her natural gifts and interests. She had been a wonderful writer and a powerful persuasive speaker. She enjoyed the spotlight and having a crowd’s undivided attention. We looked at where she was living now and the opportunities available. We recognized that she had actually already begun the path a few years ago, but for some reason did not stick with it. So together we refocused her creative attentions into that new direction: “Making People Laugh!”

Sharon is not only my client she is my Mom. This may have made my task as her Creativity Coach easier in some ways and more difficult in others. When you know someone very well, you have access to information about her that a new acquaintance might not. But often what happens as well is that something obvious can be overlooked. So when we had that “Ah-ha!” moment of discovering the truth about her creative power, it literally made us both burst into tears! About a week later I came across a continuing education course at the local college called “Beginning Stand-Up.” She immediately signed up and I am so proud to announce that she will be performing with her classmates in front of a live audience at Tickle Me Comedy Club in Kahunaville at Treasure Island Casino and Resort on the Las Vegas Strip next Tuesday, October , 20th. I’ll be there in the audience laughing and clapping, along with many others.

I never would have imagined that my Mom would start performing original stand-up comic material in her mid-70s. Now that it’s happening, I can’t imagine her not! You never know where the power of your creative spirit might lead you, but you can bet it will be enjoyable! What would you be doing if you tapped into your creative potential? You might be surprised! The more you allow your creative self to shine through the more connected, powerful, and vitalized your experience of your life will feel.

  2. I knew that lady you speak so eloquently and passionately about. She is like a sister to me, and I love her unashamedly. There are a lot of things I would have expected you to write about your mom, and a lot of things I could have imagined that she would pursue. Stand up just isn’t one of them! I hope that her outing wa as successful as the Alice she has lived and the way she has touched so many people, including me.
