Greetings from sunny Las Vegas on this fine Summer Solstice! Let’s face it. It’s summer here and it’s hot. It’s 115 degrees hot, and that feels like stepping into an oven when you walk outside today. So on this beautiful Summer Solstice, this longest day of the year, my family and I will be celebrating indoors in the air-conditioned comfort of our home, sweet home. The music is resonating, the paints are out, the play-doh is being kneaded, the legos are assembling into magnificent creations, there are snacks in the fridge, and the cat is tucked in a ball for her third or fourth nap for the day.
Today is the two-year anniversary of moving into our home. I call it the Soul House. On the Summer Solstice two years ago I sat here alone in the living room with absolutely no furniture, not even a single box brought in yet, and I communed with this house. It went something like this…
“Are you ready? Are you ready for us? Are you ready for some fun? Are you ready for some crazy child energy? Are you ready to be loved more than you’ve ever been loved by any human beings? Are you ready to get play-doh and paint stuck in your grout? Are you ready for bubble baths and toys? Are you ready to have your gills filled with music? Are you ready for incense and candlelight? Are you ready for rituals and magic? Are you ready for us?”
That’s when the lion came to me as a symbol for this home. A very fitting beast for our energy and a sign that we would always be protected here. A few days later I started this collage as a place to honor our home. It’s just a place where we can post little offerings to the Soul House. It’s become an on-going visual journal of the seasons and experiences as they occur. We just keep layering stuff on here!
So, after we enjoy the shelter from the heat today, we will emerge as the sun goes down, because the truth is, this year, the Summer Solstice is all about the full moon. It’s been 49 years since the Summer Solstice has occurred on a full moon. Tonight we will enjoy the backyard and burn our fire, blow our bubbles, and throw our colors about. I’ll play the harp, and he’ll play his drum, and the kids will use their precious child energy to conjure the fairies out from the cracks in our giant leaning tree that I love so much.
How will you celebrate this Summer Solstice? What experience will you create today and tonight?
Enjoy! The bounty of summer is all around us.
