Write a Letter to Your Creator

letters to my creator

Today is December 1st and the beginning of Spiritual Literacy Month. December is also Write A Friend Month. So, to celebrate both at the same time, your Creating Exercise for today is to write a letter to your friend who created you. You can address it to God, The Universe, Buddha, Jesus, Mom or whomever you believe is your Creator. Just let whatever wants to come out, come out. Writing to your Creator is a great way to tap into your creative life. It is a harmless way to release any frustrations you may be feeling over challenges you might be facing. It is also a great way to get in touch with your positive feelings of gratitude and appreciation. So, give it a try. It doesn’t have to be very long or fancy.

Besides, your creator knows how to read between the lines… Continue reading

It’s All About the Gratitude!

creating and gratitude

Does it seem as strange to you as it does to me that we only celebrate Thanksgiving once a year? I mean there are so many things to be thankful for every day, all day long…

The Thanksgiving Day holiday is a time to acknowledge all that you are thankful for. The tradition is to gather together with friends and family to share some words of thanks together as a group. How have your Thanksgiving Days been lately? Have you gathered for a feast? Has anyone spoken up about what they are most thankful for? Has it become just another day to eat a lot of food and watch football?

As your Creativity Coach, I urge you to celebrate the holiday this year with the intention of expressing Continue reading

10 Suggestions for Creating Better Conversations

Creating Better Conversations

What were you thinking when you first read Chapter 7 in Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland? That chapter is titled “A Mad Tea Party.” I remember being so disturbed. I had never heard a conversation like that before. I remember feeling like I wanted to stop reading. (Even now when I read it, I get all itchy feeling). I wanted for Alice to run away. I was worried for the Doormouse! I didn’t like the Hatter and I was beginning to not like the Hare very much either. When that chapter was over, I was so relieved. This is how I feel so many conversations seem to go these days. They can be full of conflict, misperceptions, and plain old rudeness. In contrast, I was fascinated by the conversations in Jane Austen’s novels. There is such a careful selection of words in order to convey the most accurate meaning. Perhaps exceedingly cautious and overstated at times, but still better exchanges than those provided by the nasty old Hatter!

If you feel the same way, here are 10 simple suggestions to help improve the quality of your conversations. This week is Better Conversation Week, so what better time to put these tips into action! Just in time for Thanksgiving, too, when many of us will be spending some quality time with friends and family engaging in the fine old art of conversation. Try a few of these suggestions out and watch your experience of life improve today… Continue reading

Be the Author of Your Greatness Story!

Your Greatness Story

It’s November now and the beginning of Family Stories Month. Yay! I’m so excited about this… Today is November 1st and National Author’s Day. I’d like to celebrate today with you, by sharing a family story about a very special up and coming author I know.

My five year old son is in Kindergarten and he’s learning to read and write. I don’t remember learning to read until maybe the third grade, but now, everyone seems to be in a real hurry to achieve greatness. Although I am a firm believer that every one of us has greatness resonating inside of us, I also firmly believe that we each run on our own timetable for this greatness to manifest. It’s not something that can be rushed through. It requires patience. It requires the delicate nurturing of your creative life. It can’t be demanded, expected and measured across the board. Despite what some institutions think, there is no educational standard for it. Each person will come to their greatness in their own time and in their own way. There will be a lot of challenges along the way and a lot of lessons to be learned. It will require a strong understanding of and belief in yourself. It will take some hard work, a bit of luck, and a good dose of openness to receiving it. Continue reading

Thinking Freely About Your Most Creative Beliefs

ThinkCreatively
Today is the unofficial national holiday: National Freethought Day. No offense to the scientifically minded Freethinkers out there, but I just had a thought that came to me freely through my intuition. I’m going to give you a Creating Exercise today.

“What makes a freethinker is not his beliefs but the way in which he holds them. If he holds them because his elders told him they were true when he was young, or if he holds them because if he did not he would be unhappy, his thought is not free; but if he holds them because, after careful thought he finds a balance of evidence in their favor, then his thought is free, however odd his conclusions may seem.”

– Bertrand Russell, Philosopher

For your Creating Exercise I would like for you to consider a belief. Choose one that you had when you were very young. Pick a good one. The more unbelievable it is, the better. It may even border on the magical… for example:

When I was eight years old, I believed that I could hold my breath underwater for as long as I wanted to without struggle. I would lie in bed at night in my room and practice this talent. I would sometimes count when I did it, then eventually just get bored and stop counting because I could hold my breath forever. I would pretend my room was sealed like a fish tank and full of water. I would imagine myself swimming through my room. Continue reading

10 Action Items for Immediate Self Improvement

Did you know that September is Self Improvement Month? Well, if you didn’t, don’t worry, you still have 3 days to get on the ball and start improving yourself! Here’s my list of 10 fail-proof action items for self-improvement that you can accomplish today, right now. Seriously, this might just be my best creating exercise ever!

creatingyourexperience

  1. Forgive yourself… Right now, say it out loud, “(state your name), I forgive you!”
  1. Forgive others… Same thing, say it out loud, “(the name of the person you need to forgive), I forgive you!”
  1. Let go of anger, fear, regret and worry. None of these things serve you. Some things truly are beyond your control. It’s time to start using the energy tied up in these useless activities for a greater good.
  1. Acknowledge that you have strength and limits, and just to be clear, that is not limitless strength. It’s okay to feel sad, angry, or frustrated. No one expects you to be a superhero except maybe you. Be present with your feelings as they come. Be mindful of their power over you and others. Observe them from a safe place. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
  1. Give yourself a hug. Go ahead, really, do it. You are worthy of great love.
  1. Let yourself smile. Let that smile grow into a giggle. Let that giggle grow into a laugh. Laughter heals.
  1. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Hold it and release. Repeat 3 times.
  1. Blow a kiss to someone you miss.
  1. Call someone you love and tell him or her that you love him or her. This one is win-win. Chances are that person wants to hear what you have to say just as badly as you want to say it. If they don’t pick up the phone, be sure to leave it as a message. No better time than the present to tell someone you love them.
  1. Know that you are perfect just the way you are right now.

Great job! You look 10 years younger and you feel 10 pounds lighter. Awesome, isn’t it?

Set Your Intentions on Fire!

New Moon Creating Ritual

Paying attention to the cycles of nature can greatly support your creative life. The monthly orbit of the moon around the earth is one of the most obvious of nature’s cycles. The moon itself has long been held as a symbol of creativity. By respecting and working with the cycles of the moon you can infuse its power into your creating abilities.

The New Moon is the part of the moon’s cycle when the earth is blocking the light from the sun. It is a time of fertility. When you pant a seed, you push it into the earth, where no light can reach it. Here is the place it needs to be in order to germinate and become a living thing. Likewise, when the moon is at its darkest, that is when it is time to plant the seeds of our intentions. By performing this New Moon Ritual, you will be able to clarify your intentions and put the power of the creative moon behind them. Watch as they manifest for you throughout the month. You should take the ritual seriously, but at the same time, have fun with it. Be creative! You can use my suggestions as guidelines, while at the same time finding creative ways to honor your unique creative power.

Initiation

We will start by lighting a candle. Lighting a fire is a metaphor for initiation. It helps draw your focus and the focus of your guides to this present moment. Sit and reflect for a few minutes about what you are grateful for in your life. Then, reflect on what could make your life better or more enjoyable than it already is. Perhaps you want to start a new project and are seeking a positive result. Perhaps you want to improve on a relationship or address a health concern. Continue reading
