Friday = Art

In my classes, we’ve been experimenting with watercolor textures. We just allow the images to evolve as we go. Do you see an image emerging in this one? Just focus on the shapes and colors. Allow your thoughts to simmer.

SpiritOfTheForestSM.jpg

I saw this image after I woke up from an intense dream. The dream was unrelated, but as I was recreating this image in real time, I realized it was linked to a memory of hiking in New Zealand. The forests there are quite magical and full of sprites and faeries. I was hiking along such a trail in the woods not far from the Franz Josef Glacier when I saw a creature that I could not describe. It was no ordinary deer, but a creature like that you might encounter Continue reading

The Circle

The truth is that, everything always comes back to the circle. The circle represents Infinite Potential. It’s the beginning and the end in one fluid form. It’s the shape of our planets, our sun, and it’s everywhere we look, when we open ourselves to receive. It’s the first lesson I will teach any student or class. It’s the introduction to my work, it’s the introduction to who you really are:

May we never forget that we are all one. Continue reading

Every Crumb Is Special

CrumbsSm

Looking at my plate,
there are a dozen crumbs staring back up at me.
With every bite
another cluster of crumbs falls.
Each one a unique experience.
Each one with a story to tell. Continue reading

Creating Consequences: The Good Kind!

Trustinme

Consequence: A result or effect of an action or condition.

This morning I went for a run. I like to run. I don’t run far or fast, but I enjoy getting sweaty and the feel of my feet pounding the ground. I even enjoy the aches in my knees that tend to let up after a minute or so. But the best part of running, is what happens to my brain. It’s what neuroscientists call “transient hypofrontality.” Really, if you want to know the truth, it’s what I live for. It is what happens when we are experiencing our creative potential. It’s also what happens when people who don’t usually allow themselves to paint or draw give it a try.

I’m no neuroscientist, but basically here’s how it works: So when I run, my body starts doing stuff that it doesn’t do all the time. It has to work at it, because I’m really no star athlete. My age and condition require that my normally busy brain devote some effort to this activity so that I don’t fall off the sidewalk and into oncoming traffic. Yeah, that would be bad. Because my brain is just like yours and the most awesome organ, it automatically knows how to Continue reading

Is Your Creative Life Worth Fighting For?

Two Brains

How much time do you spend watching TV? This image appears on page 27 of my book Vitalize Your Creative Life. I stand by this graphic and the message it conveys. I also freely admit that I am a TV binger and lifelong TV addict. By the word “TV” I mean the effortless preoccupation of my brain by programmed sounds and videos on a screen (of any size) while the remainder of my body remains relatively inactive. In part I had no choice. I grew up with TV. I am the product of an early generation exposed to a now common type of addiction. Continue reading

Creating Tradition: Preserving Your Favorite Holiday Image

Christmas Tree Tradition

Last Christmas I was so happy to be able to leave my white Christmas tree up for the entire season! You see, last year I had a little, umm, disagreement with my new cat, Freeda. She decided that the tree was put up for her pleasure and she took great pleasure indeed from climbing it, clawing at the ornaments, chewing on the string of lights, and eventually toppling the entire thing over more than once. This all happened with in the first 24 hours of its emergence from the box. Sadly, for the safety of all concerned, I had to put the tree back in its box and enjoy Christmas without a Christmas tree. But, this year, the tree remained up. Freeda did crawl into it several times, but with more self-control and grace than before, so I considered this a healthy compromise. Continue reading

Creating Breakthroughs

Isn’t this the most beautiful thing you’ve seen all day? I think it is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen all year. This little doodle was drawn last week by a reluctant student of mine named Nathan. Nathan confessed to me later that it was the first thing he had drawn in over 25 years. Before that moment, 25 years ago, when he had decided not to trust his creative self anymore, he had been an accomplished artist. He was a prolific painter and portrait artist. At the same time he had also slowly been allowing his addiction to drugs and alcohol ravage his life. His addictions finally won the battle, and he had convinced himself that he would never be able to create again.

I had met with Nathan for the first time about a month ago. He was about six weeks into Continue reading
