Shaman

This collage was inspired by an interview I was watching of Joseph Campbell on Netflix, specifically “The First Storytellers.” As a children’s book writer I often look to Joseph Campbell for guidance. It’s part of my mission to create stories that speak of and from the soul within. The interview is really fascinating as they discuss different cultures and how myth is kept alive through reverent ritualistic practices. There was talk about the role of the shaman being a conduit of spirit through a personal psychological experience. He says that artists are the shamans of the contemporary world. Artists keep the myth and mystery alive in our culture.

I thank you, artists of all forms, for expressing the mystery of the creator that resides within us all.

Love,

Bonnie

Creating Breakthroughs

Isn’t this the most beautiful thing you’ve seen all day? I think it is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen all year. This little doodle was drawn last week by a reluctant student of mine named Nathan. Nathan confessed to me later that it was the first thing he had drawn in over 25 years. Before that moment, 25 years ago, when he had decided not to trust his creative self anymore, he had been an accomplished artist. He was a prolific painter and portrait artist. At the same time he had also slowly been allowing his addiction to drugs and alcohol ravage his life. His addictions finally won the battle, and he had convinced himself that he would never be able to create again.

I had met with Nathan for the first time about a month ago. He was about six weeks into Continue reading

What Inspires You?

Faith Hope Love

What inspires you? What is it that gets you all excited about starting a new project or creating something in your life? Can you narrow it down to a few words? Inspiration comes from so many sources. It is all around you! If you could just open your eyes and see it, you would know that inspiration is everywhere and in every thing.

Some of you may know that I’ve been holding Creating Workshops at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission this past year. Working with the clients in addiction recovery there has been one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences of my life and I just wanted to tell you a little more about it.

Every day, the Las Vegas Rescue Mission feeds 1,000 people who are either homeless or in need. People begin to line up at the doors of the cafeteria hours before they open. Everyone who comes is fed, some only stay for a meal, but others stay to rebuild their shattered lives. There are almost 200 people Continue reading

What kind of Artist are you?

muse

Today is International Artist Day, which started in 2004 to honor the contributions that artists make to society. What is your definition of an artist? Do you consider yourself to be an artist?

Like most people, you probably associate the word “artist” with the visual arts. You might think of Pablo Picasso or Auguste Rodin. I’m here to tell you that it’s time to let go of that limiting belief and expand your definition of what an artist is. Artists come in all varieties. In my opinion, it’s really all about your unique connection to Divine Inspiration that makes you an artist. Your creative thoughts are like a mystical unseen entity floating about just beyond your physical reach, delivering instructions to you (sometimes it seems in a foreign language) through the extremely complex network of your nervous system. When you learn how to develop a relationship with this entity, you are able to manifest art in the real physical world… making you an artist! Have you heard the term “art as life” before? That’s pretty much where I’m going with this… Continue reading
