What inspires you? What is it that gets you all excited about starting a new project or creating something in your life? Can you narrow it down to a few words? Inspiration comes from so many sources. It is all around you! If you could just open your eyes and see it, you would know that inspiration is everywhere and in every thing.
Some of you may know that I’ve been holding Creating Workshops at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission this past year. Working with the clients in addiction recovery there has been one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences of my life and I just wanted to tell you a little more about it.
Every day, the Las Vegas Rescue Mission feeds 1,000 people who are either homeless or in need. People begin to line up at the doors of the cafeteria hours before they open. Everyone who comes is fed, some only stay for a meal, but others stay to rebuild their shattered lives. There are almost 200 people living on the campus at one time, and over 100 of them are enrolled in an intensive addiction recovery program that lasts for over a year. These are the ones I have been creating art with. These are the courageous men and women who inspire me these days.
Every person who walks through those doors to the cafeteria now is confronted with three giant words of encouragement: Faith, Hope, and Love. I can’t imagine that they are not inspired as well when they see those words and are shown some kindness and compassion, even if just for one meal.
It was my honor to facilitate the creation those words with the clients in the addiction recovery program. Some of them had never held a paintbrush before. Many of them had never felt they were creative or artistic in any way. Some of them were afraid of making a mistake or messing everything up. All of them struggle with low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. This is the true magic of creating like a child again. As we created I was there to nurture that inner child. I was there to show them how amazing they were. I was there to guide them back to that time when you created without any inhibitions and simply for the joy of it. Together we laughed, played, and indulged in the experience of creating.
With each new class they grew a little more confident. With each new class they smiled a little more. With each new class they walked into the classroom with their heads held a little higher. I could see it. I could see the transformations occurring. I was and still am in awe of them.
So back to the question, what inspires you? Do you have a story to share? Please feel free to comment below, I’d love to hear what makes your heart go a flutter.
