Your Creativity & The Moon Cycles (Part 3: The First Quarter Moon)

MoonHere we are at the First Quarter Moon phase. What did you discover over the last few days during the Crescent Moon phase when you started saying, “yes!” more? What opportunities were delivered to you through your positive interactions? Now is the time to take inventory of any and all possible paths that have been presented and choose a purposeful action.

Remember the Game of Life? I used to love playing this game with my family. We had a stack of board games and on game night I would run and grab The Game of Life. It was my favorite and I didn’t mind how long it would take to get through the game, but other members of my family were not as eager to sit in a chair for the hour minimum it often required, so when I would bring it to the table I was often greeted with a few groans. If you’re not familiar with the game, I’ll take a moment to get you up to speed… So, there are these little car game pieces that you get and you are a peg person that sits in the car. At the beginning it’s just you and a windy road with several forks in it ahead of you. Each square ahead gives you instructions, which are basically life events to “experience.” The game is a good metaphor for what I’m suggesting because at the very beginning of the game you are presented with a big choice, whether to go left or right. Likewise, at the First Quarter Moon, you are presented with a choice. You need to choose one actionable item. And, it’s one that once you get to the end of the game and realize as you look back, made all the difference. When you spin the wheel and make your first choice, both directions appear as perfectly good options. What if, unlike the Game of Life, you had an intention, like say a New Moon intention, to help guide you and make the better choice? Your intention is the invisible cord connected from your future creations back to this present moment, before your creation was manifested. Staying in connection with this cord along the way, helps you to make better choices as you move forward in time.

Creating Exercise – First Quarter Moon

The First Quarter Moon as a symbol can be drawn as a circle with a line through the center. Try drawing one now. Now rotate it to the right a little… what do you see? Here’s a hint… “Who you gonna call?”

QuarterMoon.jpgThis symbol is called the interdictory symbol. It means to prohibit an action. You can think of it as a metaphor for your own resistance. When the moon is in a quarter phase it is square to the earth. This means that the moon is physically at a 90º angle with respect to the earth and the sun. It is the physical representation of tension and opposition. This is what you are looking for as we choose your next move.

Our experiences in life are full of opposition. I can show you an example from my own home provided courtesy of my five-year old son. He drew this and taped it to the front door in an effort to keep our indoor cat from trying to escape out into the irresistible spring air. The moral of this story is that our fearless little kitty is not hindered one bit by this symbol. She continues to attempt escape almost every time without fail when she hears that door open.

noCat.JPGYou can think of the First Quarter Moon’s shape as a metaphor for that first challenging actionable item in your journey toward bringing your creations to life. It’s that doorway, perhaps with a “do not pass” sign taped to it, that you must find your way through. Perhaps over the last week, possible courses of action have been emerging. Take a look at them now, write about them in your journal, sketch out some doodles in your sketchbook, create a list… do whatever it is that helps you to see them more clearly. Write each of them on a piece of paper or post-it note. Once you have them laid out in front of you, you will choose the one with the strongest energy to pursue. Which one appears it will take you the furthest toward your destination? Which one dares you? Which one pulls the hardest at the heart-strings of your creative soul?

heartActions.JPGNow as you consider these options and your own inner-resistance to growth (manifested as fear, lack of confidence, uncertainty, ambivalence, or complacency) you will find that the best possibility of a collection of seemingly endless possibilities to pursue is the one that pushes you the closest to the edge of your comfort zone. Can you see that one sitting in front of you now? The First Quarter Moon Phase is the time to take the first step toward that path. To help you better understand how your creativity relates to the moon cycles, I’ll give you a little sneak peak into the future… When the moon is full, there is the potential for a big reveal. But… that reveal can’t happen unless you take this important conscious action toward creating now, during this First Quarter.

So your homework for the next few days is to take an action. Do at least one thing that stretches you outside of your comfort zone. Think of it as an act of courage. Dare to express yourself in a way that you’ve only fantasized about and just haven’t summoned the nerve to do yet… Karaoke night? Open Mic night? (You know who you are…) Maybe you just need to tell someone how you really feel about them. Perhaps there is a group you’ve been thinking about joining. Maybe you need to connect with nature through a hike or camping trip. Perhaps you need to take that road trip you know you need to take as part of your research. Embrace your spontaneity, whatever it is, now is the time to stop putting it off. Take a moment right now to consider how the experience might feel, whatever it is, and notice how the feelings that bubble up relate to your intention. Your inner wisdom will reveal whether or not there is a genuine link between the two. If you’re really on to something, you’ll feel that tingle in your gut, that longing in your heart, those butterflies fluttering about, that prickly sensation on the back of your neck… Whatever your indicator is, pay attention to that. Your senses are telling you what you need to know.

As always please take action by sharing your comments below. I want to know what you are discovering about your own creativity.

Game on! It’s your move!

Bonnie

P.S. Oh, yeah, and don’t forget to look up at the moon! When you see that big “no” symbol, recognize the challenge you are facing and have courage. The moon is a reflection of the sun’s light. What are you seeing reflected through your next actionable choice?

Half in darkness, half in light,
which path do I choose tonight?

  1. Thanks for another great article for the journey of this moon cycle. I, too, loved the game of Life as a kid, but even more, am having a great time living out the real thing. Looking forward to spending time with the exercises, and maybe even some karaoke!

  2. Please let me know when you are going to do karaoke so I can come and listen! I can’t sing but I love the whole idea. The game of life is a wonderful way to spend time with friends and family. I had forgotten all about it. Am struggling with my intention but am getting to work on the post its and my soul teaching cards. Spent quite a bit of time gazing at the moon last night. It always amazes me how quickly it changes. Kind of like life itself.

  3. Great! Yes! Paying attention to the moon cycles is a great way to stay in touch with your own creative cycles. Always changing… and once you tune in to and become mindful of your own patterns, you become more adept at handling less than favorable changes, and you can also encourage the type of changes you are enjoying and want to see more of! See you in the Karaoke Bar!
