Your Creativity & The Moon Cycles (Part 4: The Waxing Gibbous Moon)

MoonWelcome to the Waxing Gibbous Moon phase! Hey, we’re getting close to the Full Moon now! So much closer… but not quite there yet! That’s how it feels when you’re growing. I welcome growth in my life, because it is through my growth experiences that I evolve. I understand that I am not just evolving for my own soul’s benefit, but I am evolving for my entire species! This excites me. I am a growth junkie, really. It’s why I spend my days creating stuff to share with you. You think it’s about you? Well, it is, but it’s also about me. Everything I create for you I have tested on myself first. I’m my own best lab rat. This moon phase is extra special to me, because I was born under a Waxing Gibbous Moon. So, basically, growth is part of my lunar nature.

So, back to you and your growth… How did it go over the past few days? Now is the time for some reflection, under the light of the Waxing Gibbous Moon. You took an exciting action recently that tossed you outside of your comfort zone. Ask yourself these questions in regard to the results of the action, but remember not to be hard on yourself. Show yourself the compassion you would a beloved friend. Focus more on the progress you’re making and less on any mistakes:

What did you learn?

What worked? What felt good?

What felt awful?

What surprised you?

What did you discover?

Did you disappear?
No, you probably showed yourself that you could be stretched without self-imploding.

What might you try differently next time?

How can you tweak the process?

The Waxing Gibbous Moon appears off-balance. It can be uncomfortable to look at. It’s the perfect symbol for what you are doing creatively right now. You are going into an uncomfortable place where you will confront some negative thoughts and limiting beliefs. You will look at yourself and a past action with discernment. But this is the creative work of growth and personal transformation. This is where you must go to experience the truth. It is this part of the journey that will make or break your big reveal at the Full Moon.

But, seriously, don’t be intimidated. Growth is the path to abundance and authenticity and who doesn’t want more of that? The rewards of this work are greater than you can ever imagine. This reminds me of my favorite abundance affirmation…

“Divine Spirit, please grant me x, y, and zor something better!”

This is the time to create healthier thought habits. You must think abundantly in order to create abundance. Gaining better understanding of who you really are through your personal growth is what makes you a more confident, more self-aware, and authentic you. One thing I know about you already, is that you are a powerful creative being. Maybe you just haven’t grown into those shoes yet, but they’re on the shelf waiting for you to get there. Shiny, diamond-studded footwear… Keep stretching, wiggle those toes, and take a few leaps! Before you know it you’ll have those puppies on your tootsies and you’ll be doing a little dance while you create your experiences like I always knew you could.

Creating Exercise – Waxing Gibbous Moon

For your Creating Exercise during this Waxing Gibbous moon phase, I want you to start expressing the answers to the questions above in the form of a love poem. This is a self-love poem. Write a poem to yourself. If you prefer, create a song, painting, or dance that expresses love to yourself. However you feel you can best express to yourself the gratitude you feel for embarking on this creative journey. Re-read, re-write, re-sing, re-create, re-correograph… Rinse and repeat. Now is the time to really get cracking on your creating!

When I design Creating Exercises I always try to keep the focus on the process. This is where the magic happens. When you focus too much on the outcome, you can be blinded to the treasures presented along the way. True abundance doesn’t occur at the end of the cycle, it’s happening all around you all the time. All you have to do is open your eyes and see it!

gowth.jpgThis is a special Gibbous Moon because it is happening over the Spring Equinox. The equinox presents us with a special energetic boost. Spring is here! The earth is becoming alive and growing in so many ways. Just take a moment to observe nature and see all the treasures being revealed. As we approach the Full Moon in a few more days, all of these treasures will be pointing you toward your big reveal. Keep your eyes open and get out into the world and experience all it has to offer. Track what you discover. Express yourself. Be present! Be alive! You are in the heart and soul of your creating cycle, so don’t miss out on this opportunity.

One warning for you, brave Gibbous… Any challenges or struggles that you encounter during this phase must be viewed through the lens of the positive. It’s part of the Waxing Gibbous process. The moon is more than half-full so think of it as a metaphor for the glass being half-full sort of thinking. Try drawing a Gibbous Moon shape in your sketchbook or on a scrap of paper right now. Use a circle template and trace a circle. Now draw a straight vertical line in the middle. Now “free-hand” draw a curve to the right that bisects the right half of your circle. Very nice… a Gibbous Moon. Look at that! You’re almost there!

GibbousMoon.JPG When I first started out as a designer, computers were pretty new and frequently crashed. There were also endless issues with memory and getting the computer to handle all that I wanted from it. Ultimately, I would push too hard and the computer would crash. Sometimes the result would be losing hours of work. Poof! Gone. I would take a moment to flush and rage, but then I would just get right back to work, starting from the beginning. I began to realize that when I re-created something the second (or third) time, especially right after losing it, I made it much faster, cleaner, and more efficiently. It was better than the last one. Growth was occurring. It was all part of the process of creating better work. I was developing valuable muscle memory in my brain, my creativity headquarters. This is the gift of the Waxing Gibbous Moon. What can appear as a set-back, is really part of the process of positive growth.

Okay, enough reading, get out there and start expressing yourself. There is important work to be done! I’ll be posting again in a few days on the 22nd as the Full Moon phase begins. Don’t forget to spread the word of what your doing with these Creating Exercises. Share the love… remember to live in that spirit of abundance!
